Technical inspection of roof structures for the possibility of installing solar panels

Technical inspection of roof structures for the installation of solar panels is an important stage of preparation for the installation of solar systems.

This inspection allows us to assess the condition of the roof, its ability to withstand the additional load from the panels, and to determine the necessary measures for safe installation.

The main stages of technical inspection:

  • Assessment of the roof’s load-bearing capacity. Engineers check the strength and stability of the roof structures to make sure they can support the weight of the solar panels and mounts.
  • Analysis of the roof material. It is important to assess what material the roof is made of (metal, tile, slate, etc.) and its condition to choose the best mounts for solar panels.
  • Study the slope and orientation of the roof. This affects the efficiency of the solar system. The ideal position of the panels is at an angle that corresponds to the geographical coordinates of the place, with a maximum orientation to the south.
  • Checking the waterproofing. Engineers evaluate whether the installation of panels will damage the waterproofing of the roof and what measures are needed to preserve it.
  • Assessment of wind loads. Since solar panels can create additional wind resistance, it is necessary to calculate whether the roof can withstand increased loads.

What you need to pay attention to

  • Assessment of the roof condition:
Age of the roof. It is important to check how old the roof is, as an old roof may need to be repaired or replaced before installing the panels.
Roofing materials. Solar panels can be installed on most types of roofs (tile, metal, bitumen, concrete), but each material has its own mounting requirements.
Roof integrity. It is important to check whether the roof is damaged, leaking or deformed.
  • Static analysis of the structure:
The load on the roof. Solar panels add additional weight. It is necessary to assess whether the roof structure can withstand the additional load, taking into account the panels, fasteners and possible precipitation (snow, rain).
Building structure. Analysis of the main roof elements (rafters, beams) to make sure they can withstand additional mechanical loads.
  • Roof orientation and slope:
Roof orientation. For efficient solar energy harvesting, the roof should face south or have an appropriate slope.
Tilt angle. The ideal angle for panels in Ukraine is usually 30-45 degrees. If the roof has a smaller or larger angle, special designs may be required to correct it.
  • Assessment of shading:
Check the shading. Trees, other buildings, or roof elements (antennas, chimneys) can create shading that will reduce the efficiency of the panels.
  • Seasonal changes. Different periods of the year need to be taken into account, as the shadow from trees or other objects can change.
  • Electrical infrastructure:
Electrical connection. Assessment of the home’s power grid for connecting inverters and other equipment.
System security. The installation of solar panels requires that the building complies with current fire and electrical safety standards.
  • Documentary verification:
Availability of permits. Permits from local authorities or utilities may be required to install the panels.
Compliance with regulations. The building must meet all the technical and legal requirements for solar installations.

Contact GlobalBud Ukraine

After the technical inspection, a report is drawn up that includes recommendations on the possibility and conditions for installing solar panels. If the roof does not meet the necessary requirements, options for modernizing or strengthening the structure may be offered.

For a professional technical inspection, please contact GlobalBud Ukraine engineers who have experience in preparing structures for solar panel installation and will ensure safe and reliable installation of the system.
