Installation and construction works for accessibility for people with limited mobility

One of the main requirements of modern construction is to ensure that facilities are accessible to people with reduced mobility. This applies to both public buildings and residential buildings, streets and other infrastructure facilities. Such measures not only ensure comfort for all users, but also comply with the requirements of the current legislation of Ukraine.

Legal requirements and building codes

According to the State Building Code of Ukraine B.2.2-40:2018 “Inclusiveness of Buildings and Structures”, all new buildings and structures must take into account the needs of people with limited mobility. This applies to both physical access to facilities and safe movement within the territory. The Law of Ukraine “On the Fundamentals of Social Protection of Persons with Disabilities in Ukraine” also provides the legal basis for the implementation of such norms.

The main elements of accessibility include:

  • ramps with an appropriate angle of inclination;
  • elevators and lifting platforms;
  • specialized bathrooms;
  • tactile and visual markings;
  • parking spaces for people with disabilities.

Stages of installation and construction work

1. Design

At the design stage, it is important to consider:

  • compliance of the facility with the DBN standards;
  • logical placement of accessibility elements;
  • integration of accessibility measures into the overall concept of the building or territory.

This is done by conducting a detailed survey of the area and taking into account the needs of different groups of people.

2. Installation of structures

The following works are performed during the construction phase:

  • installation of ramps (width at least 1.2 m, slope up to 5%);
  • installation of handrails with a height of 0.85 m
  • installation of elevators with minimum cabin dimensions of 1.1 x 1.4 m;
  • placement of tactile tiles on pedestrian walkways.

3. Final arrangement

The final works include:

  • marking of parking spaces;
  • installation of signs and information plates;
  • checking all elements for compliance with the standards.

The importance of a professional approach

The construction of facilities for people with limited mobility requires compliance with strict standards and regulations. Incorrect installation of a ramp or failure to comply with the height of the handrails can not only reduce usability but also jeopardize the safety of users.
