Load-Bearing Capacity Calculation of Building Structures

Load-bearing capacity calculation is a key stage in the design and operation of any construction project. The accuracy of these calculations determines the safety, durability, and efficiency of the building or structure.

What Is Load-Bearing Capacity?

Load-bearing capacity is the ability of a structure to withstand and transfer loads without exceeding strength or deformation limits. In simple terms, it is the maximum load a structure can carry without collapsing or experiencing excessive deflection.

The calculation is carried out in accordance with DBN В.1.2-2:2006, DBN В.2.6-98:2009, and the provisions of the Law of Ukraine “On Regulation of Urban Development Activity”.

When Is a Load-Bearing Capacity Calculation Required?

  • During new construction of buildings or structures.

  • In case of reconstruction, extension, or additional floors.

  • When changing the functional purpose of a building.

  • For technical inspections of old or emergency structures.

  • Before commissioning a building that has not been used for a long time.

  • During project documentation expertise or preparation for energy efficiency certification.

Main Types of Structures Requiring Calculation

  • Foundations

  • Load-bearing walls (brick, monolithic, prefabricated)

  • Columns, beams, girders

  • Floor slabs

  • Trusses and arches

  • Retaining walls

  • Civil engineering structures (tanks, tunnels, bridges)

Types of Loads Considered

The following loads are taken into account:

  • Permanent loads (self-weight of structures, equipment)

  • Long-term variable loads (snow, wind, occupancy loads)

  • Short-term loads (vehicles, installation equipment)

  • Special loads (seismic, explosive, temperature-related)

Stages of Load-Bearing Capacity Calculation

  1. Collection of initial data: geology, geodesy, materials, loads, climate conditions.

  2. Creation of a calculation model: simplified representation of the structure.

  3. Determination of internal forces in structural elements.

  4. Limit state verification:

    • First group (strength, stability)

    • Second group (deflections, cracking)

  5. Selection of cross-sections and reinforcement (for reinforced concrete structures).

  6. Analysis of results and preparation of a report.

Consequences of Incorrect or Incomplete Calculation

  • Deformation of elements (deflections, cracking)

  • Structural failure

  • Threat to life and health

  • Interruption of building operation

  • Administrative or criminal liability of the client or contractor

Common Mistakes Without Professional Support

  • Ignoring additional loads (snow, wind, etc.)

  • Calculation without considering the real technical condition

  • Failure to account for changes in legislation and standards

  • Use of outdated design solutions
