Resource Room and Quiet Room — What’s the Difference?

A resource room and a quiet room are two different but interconnected spaces increasingly implemented in schools, offices, rehabilitation centers, and business environments to ensure psychological comfort, inclusivity, and stress reduction. Below is a short comparison and definition of each type of room, which can be useful when planning facility infrastructure or designing a building.

What Is a Resource Room?

A resource room is a specially equipped space designed for individual or small-group learning, primarily for children with special educational needs (SEN).

Main Functions:

  • Correctional and developmental sessions with a speech therapist, psychologist, or special education teacher;

  • Adaptation of learning materials in line with an Individual Development Program (IDP);

  • Emotional relief for children with ASD, ADHD, etc.;

  • Support of an inclusive environment in educational institutions.

Requirements for Arrangement:

  • Zones for learning, sensory relaxation, and rest;

  • Soft lighting, soundproofing, ergonomic furniture;

  • Didactic materials, sensory panels, hanging swings (depending on needs).

Regulated by: Order of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 609 dated 01.06.2020 and guidelines for creating inclusive educational environments.

What Is a Quiet Room?

A quiet room is an isolated space designed for psychological and emotional recovery, relaxation, and short-term rest from sensory overload.

Main Functions:

  • Rest for employees or students during periods of high workload;

  • Reduction of anxiety and elimination of noise and bright light exposure;

  • A space for meditation, rest, individual conversations, or self-reflection.

Requirements for Arrangement:

  • Soundproofing, absence of visual distractions;

  • Ability to darken the room;

  • Comfortable furniture (bean bags, poufs, loungers), optionally — aroma diffusers or relaxation audio systems.

Not mandatory, but a recommended practice in corporate, educational, and healthcare settings.
